Recently, I bumped into one of my school friends at the mall. We had been inseperable in school, but eventually, different courses of study and being busy with the nitty-gritty of life made us lose touch with each other. There were, of course, the whoops of joy and general excitement that results from meeting long-lost friends. We chatted nineteen to the dozen over coffee and snacks, caught up with each others' lives....all the major events and happenings and parted with promises to keep in touch,after exchanging mail addresses and phone numbers.
As I recounted this sweet encounter to my husband in the evening, we ended up discussing how friendships start right in school. Some last for years together, while some fade away, to become cherished memories in the heart. It was then that I realised there is an interesting friendship unfolding right before my eyes.
My daughter aged three years, already has a best friend in school. They hold hands when walking to the classroom from the school gate. They talk so much in class that the teachers throw up their hands in desperation. Together they look like two peas in a pod, but differ in temperament and personality. My daughter is very talkative, while her friend is shy and reserved. But, they bring out the best in each other. My fussy eater learnt to eat properly with her friend, while her friend learnt to open up a bit and express her emotions. The bond between them is so strong that frantic telephone calls are exchanged if either of them misses school for even a day.
Undoubtedly, their friendship gives a new dimension to Aristotle’s rhetorical question “What is a friend? A single soul in two bodies”
I fervently hope, though, that her friendship lasts instead of withering away like most others.
